I agree that a completely raw diet is the optimal diet for most healthy dogs. Some folks however, especially those with larger-sized furry friends whose weight it is critical to monitor, like Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, etc., feed a mix of kibble and raw for a variety of reasons. In such cases, I would always recommend maximizing the raw portion of the diet and minimizing kibble.

I would not necessarily compare all kibble to McDonald’s chicken McNuggets. For those that choose to feed kibble as part of the diet, however, it is critical to research brands and ingredients very carefully. Many pet foods on the market are even worse than Chicken McNuggets. I recommend folks obtain the Whole Dog Journal articles about kibble ingredients and diet choices.

"If you are feeding an all raw diet, you are providing the best diet already for proper weight management – just feed less. If you are feeding some kibble, just reduce the amount of kibble fed."

I agree with reducing the amount of kibble fed, but with one caveat: to zero =)

All dogs should be on an all-raw diet! Melissa, what would you compare kibble to? How about eating chicken nuggets from McDonald's for every meal of your entire life?
