Scoring Methodology

How we score pet food ingredients

Our scoring isn't opinion. Every rating is grounded in ingredient definitions, safety classifications, and nutrient bioavailability research from the same bodies that govern the entire US pet food industry.

Why you can trust our pet food ingredient analyzer

Every ingredient is evaluated using publicly available definitions and scientific references rather than marketing claims or brand preferences. By relying on established standards from the following recognized authorities, we provide consistent, evidence-based information to help pet owners better understand what's in their pet food.

U.S. Food & Drug Administration
We flag ingredients the FDA has investigated, restricted, or linked to adverse health events — including BHA, ethoxyquin, and legumes under the DCM investigation. Since Oct 2024 the FDA directly controls all pet food ingredient approvals.
National Research Council
The NRC (National Academies of Sciences) publishes peer-reviewed nutrient bioavailability data for dogs and cats. AAFCO's own profiles are built on NRC research. We use NRC data to assess how well an ingredient's nutrients are actually absorbed.
World Small Animal Veterinary Assoc.
WSAVA's Global Nutrition Committee guidelines are used by veterinarians worldwide to evaluate pet food quality. Their criteria — qualified nutritionists, feeding trials, manufacturing transparency — inform how we assess brand-level trustworthiness.
AAFCO / USDA Human-Grade Standard
AAFCO defines every ingredient permitted in US pet food. "Human-grade" is a legally audited claim verified by USDA AMS — not marketing language. We flag feed-grade ingredients that cannot legally be sold for human consumption.
🟢 Green — Whole Food
Named whole meats, organs, quality fats, beneficial vegetables, and evidence-backed supplements. High NRC bioavailability. No AAFCO "by-product" classification.
🟡 Yellow — Processed / Filler
Grains, legumes (under FDA DCM investigation), starches, and unnamed flavors. Not acutely harmful but nutritionally unnecessary for carnivores and often used to reduce cost.
🔴 Red — Avoid
Rendered by-products (AAFCO-defined as unfit for human consumption), FDA-flagged chemical preservatives (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin), artificial dyes, added sugars, and feed-grade mystery ingredients with no species transparency.
Ingredient Analyzer

Pet food ingredient checker: Paste, analyze & discover the truth.

Copy the ingredient list from the back of any bag or a brand's website and paste it below. We'll decode every single ingredient.

Paste ingredient list here
Find it on the back of the bag after "Ingredients:" — paste the full list, commas and all.
How we score
Green — whole food, minimal processing, high NRC bioavailability, AAFCO-compliant named ingredient
Yellow — unnecessary fillers, grains, or FDA-investigated legumes. Not acutely harmful.
Red — AAFCO by-products, FDA-flagged chemicals (BHA/BHT/ethoxyquin), or feed-grade mystery ingredients. Avoid.

Darwin's vs the rest

Trusted pet food ingredients Darwin’s uses instead.

While most brands optimize for shelf life and cost, Darwin's optimizes for one thing: your pet's health.

🚫
What most brands use

Chicken By-Product Meal — beaks, feet, intestines, rendered at high heat

Corn, wheat or soy as the primary "protein" source

BHA, BHT or ethoxyquin as chemical preservatives

Artificial colors and flavors to mask poor palatability

Feed-grade ingredients, not human-grade

Cooked at extreme heat — destroying natural enzymes and nutrients

What Darwin's uses

Deboned whole chicken, beef, turkey, duck or lamb — muscle meat

Zero grains, fillers or starchy binders of any kind

Delivered frozen — fresh preservation, no chemicals needed

No artificial anything — ever

Human-grade meats, organs and fresh ground bone

Raw & minimally processed — natural nutrients fully intact

The WSAVA Transparency Test: Questions to ask your pet food brand

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association gives veterinarians a checklist to evaluate pet food brands. Most kibble brands fail. Here's how typical kibble stacks up against Darwin's:
Who formulates the food — and what are their qualifications?
❌ Kibble: Rarely disclosed. Most brands use contract formulators, not named PhD nutritionists.
✅ Darwin's: Formulated by animal nutrition experts with full transparency on sourcing and process.
Do they conduct feeding trials and publish the results?
❌ Kibble: Most rely on "formulated to meet AAFCO profiles" — a computer calculation, not a real feeding trial.
✅ Darwin's: Real food fed to real animals. Thousands of real-world results over 15+ years.
Is the food manufactured in a facility subject to human food safety standards?
❌ Kibble: Feed-grade facilities. Not subject to the same FDA inspections as human food plants.
✅ Darwin's: Human-grade meats processed in USDA-inspected facilities. Same standard as your food.

FAQs

What are red flag ingredients in dog food?

Red flag ingredients in dog food often include artificial preservatives like BHA and BHT, artificial colors, and vague ingredient names that don't clearly identify the protein source. Reading the ingredient list carefully can help you understand what each ingredient contributes to your dog's diet and whether it aligns with your feeding goals.

What are the healthiest dog food ingredients?

Healthy dog food ingredients typically include clearly identified meat or organ meats as the primary protein source, along with ingredients that provide naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids. Looking for simple, recognizable ingredients can make it easier to understand how a recipe supports complete and balanced nutrition.
