Steve Brown
Canine Nutrition Researcher & Author
Steve Brown is the person the raw pet food industry calls when a diet has to balance on paper as well as it does in theory. A renowned formulator of meat-based diets for dogs and cats, a researcher, and the author of three books on canine nutrition, he earned the nickname 'the balanced diet guy' by insisting that ancestral feeding claims be checked against measured nutrient profiles.
He developed the Canine and Feline Diet Formulator™, the software now known as the Animal Diet Formulator, which practitioners and manufacturers use to build diets that meet published nutrient requirements. His books span two decades of that work: See Spot Live Longer (Creekobear Press, 2004), Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet: Healthier Dog Food the ABC Way (Dogwise Publishing, 2010), and See Spot Live Longer the ABC Way (Dogwise), which distills the approach into two practical changes to a dry-food diet.
Brown now focuses on teaching veterinarians how to balance whole food diets, and continues to write on nutrition research, including regular contributions to Whole Dog Journal. He is part of Darwin's expert panel. Meet all of our experts.
