Why Darwin's — Not All Raw Food Is Created Equal | Darwin's Natural Pet Products

Not all raw food is created equal.

Here’s what we believe — and why it changes everything for your dog.

The problem with “good enough”

A quiet dog and cat resting indoors in muted light

Most pet food — even the kind marketed as premium — starts with a compromise.

Ingredients are sourced for cost. Heat processing destroys the nutrients dogs evolved to absorb. Fillers and additives fill the gap. By the time it reaches your dog’s bowl, very little resembles actual food.

We’ve seen the results. Chronic ear infections. Dull, brittle coats. Digestive issues that owners accept as normal. Inflammation that builds quietly for years. Dogs who seem fine — until they don’t.

We’ve also seen what happens when that changes.

Why raw nutrition is different

Dogs are physiologically built to thrive on raw, whole-food nutrition. Their digestive systems, their gut microbiome, their teeth — everything about their biology reflects thousands of years of eating real food.

Not extruded pellets. Not reconstituted protein. Real food.

Bioavailable protein

Their system can actually absorb it.

Moisture-rich nutrition

Something kibble can never replicate.

No unnecessary fillers

None of the synthetic additives their gut struggles to process.

Fresh whole organic vegetables

The results are rarely subtle. Better digestion. A coat that owners notice within weeks. Energy that returns. Conditions that soften or resolve entirely.

We’ve watched it happen across millions of meals, delivered over two decades.

Why Darwin’s — even among raw food brands

The raw pet food category has grown. That’s a good thing. More dogs eating real food is the outcome we’ve always wanted.

But not all raw food is made the same way. And the differences matter.

Ingredients that don’t require compromise

Antibiotic-free meat. Certified organic vegetables. Always.

Antibiotic-free isn’t just a label. It means the animals that become your dog’s food were raised without routine antibiotic use — the practice that contributes to antibiotic resistance and introduces residues into the food chain.

Organic vegetables means no synthetic pesticides, no GMOs, and no shortcuts on the produce that rounds out every meal.

Some raw brands source wherever the margin works. We’ve always sourced where the quality is.

Minimal processing. Nothing hidden in the method.

Here’s something most pet food companies don’t talk about: how the food is treated after it’s made.

A growing number of raw food brands use a process called High Pressure Processing (HPP) — a method that applies intense pressure to packaged food to eliminate pathogens.

It’s presented as a safety measure. What it doesn’t mention is what pressure does to the food itself: it denatures proteins, disrupts natural enzymes, and diminishes much of the nutritional advantage that made raw food worth choosing in the first place.

Darwin’s doesn’t use HPP.

The bowl

As close to its natural state as possible.

Not part of our processAdditional high-pressure post-processing — the step some raw brands add after the food is made.

We control for safety through the quality of our sourcing, rigorous testing, and a cold chain built for raw food from the start. Our meals go from production to your door without the nutritional cost of post-processing.

When the whole point is to feed your dog food that’s as close to its natural state as possible, the processing method isn’t a footnote. It’s the point.

Twenty years of getting it right

Darwin's founder Gary Tashjian with his dogs

20+ years

Millions of meals delivered

Darwin’s was founded in 2004 — before raw pet food was a category, before home delivery was an expectation, before “fresh” became a marketing word.

Our founder Gary Tashjian didn’t start Darwin’s to capitalize on a trend. He started it because a holistic veterinarian changed how he understood his own dog’s health, and he couldn’t find anyone delivering that kind of nutrition at scale.

So he built it.

Two decades later, we’ve shipped millions of meals across the country. We’ve refined our sourcing, improved our formulas, and never stopped asking whether we’re doing right by the animals we exist to serve.

That history isn’t a marketing claim. It’s a track record.

What Darwin’s customers experience

The transformation follows a pattern we’ve seen so many times it no longer surprises us — though it never stops being meaningful.

First few weeks

Digestion

Digestion improves. Stools normalize. Dogs who were gassy or inconsistent stabilize.

First month

Coat

Coats begin to change. The dullness clears. Shedding often decreases.

Over time

Energy + wellbeing

Owners describe dogs who seem younger. More energy. Less inflammation. Conditions that vets had managed for years — sometimes resolving entirely.
